VIC – Victorian High Country

Introduction

The Victorian High Country is indisputably adventure country, courtesy its rugged landscapes of ranges, valleys and peaks. Climbers and abseilers are drawn to the awe-inspiring cliffs; rafting, caving, hang gliding, mountain biking also happens in the High Country. And as for horse trails, the majesty, size and remoteness of the Alpine experience means that ‘Man from Snowy River moments’ are authentic and available to anyone.

Discover the beauty of the Victorian High Country when you join Michael Watson to show you the region. Michael began riding almost as soon as he could walk, and has long roamed the hills with fifth-generation mountain cattlemen, from whom he gained much of his vast local knowledge. He is the second generation in his family to saddle up the horses and guide visitors deep into ‘Man from Snowy River’ country. The Watsons live on a 730 acre farm adjoining the High Country, an authentic working property complete with 80-year-old house and stables, 70 horses, and family dogs who welcome you back from your day’s ride.

Itinerary Description

Days 1
Merrindie Mountain RetreatMelbourne – Mansfield
Your private guide will meet you at either Melbourne airport or city accommodation to commence your journey.
You will take the scenic drive out of the city along the Yarra River, through a historic gold mining town, valleys and past mobs of wild kangaroos. Stop in the Yarra Valley for lunch and a private barrel room tasting with the wine maker. Lunch is something special; the produce on your plate comes from the garden out the back and is dependent on what’s in season.
Enjoy a leisurely drive though the stunning Australian bush to Mansfield, arriving late in the afternoon.

Merrindie Mountain RetreatOn arrival you will be met by your host for the rest of the duration, Michael Watson, with pre-dinner drinks and a sumptuous dinner provided by your private chef at Merrindie Mountain Retreat.

Whilst in the Victoria High Country you will be staying at Merrindie Mountain Retreat on an exclusive use basis
Merrindie Mountain Retreat is a chalet-style contemporary home perched in Victoria’s High Country. Set at 800 metres on the flank of majestic ranges, it offers views of Victoria’s Alpine National Park and makes a perfect base from which to explore the natural beauty of the region.

Day 2
Horse Riding
Victorian High CountryAfter a relaxing breakfast at your accommodation you will depart for Michael’s family farm for a day in the saddle. Enjoy spectacular views and watch out for native wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies, lyrebirds and wedgetail eagles. Lunch today will be a gourmet hamper served along the track in a beautiful mountain setting.

After freshening up back at your accommodation Michael will collect you for a dinner at a local restaurant with views of the setting sun over the mountains.

Day 3
Abseiling / Rock Climbing / River Caving
Enjoy a hearty breakfast this morning as today is going to be full of adventure. Travel to Mt Buffalo, an all-seasons park, with sheer cliffs, imposing granite tors, tumbling waterfalls, snow gums and stunning wildflowers. First reserved in 1898, the 31,000 hectare park contains vegetation and fauna adapted to extremes of weather, as a result of its sub-alpine location.
It is the perfect base for an adventure packed day for the adventure enthusiast with abseiling, river caving and rock climbing all enjoyed at the same location. Travelling by foot between experiences is also a highlight with its stunning array of flora and fauna.

On return to your accommodation you will find a superb dinner has been prepared for you by your private chef.

Day 4
Stockyard Creek Pioneer Homestead Experience
The Howqua and Stockyard valleys are comprised of the famous greenstone, prized by the Aborigines for axes for many centuries. Stockyard is a remote and beautiful working farm of 420 acres in the valley completely surrounded by bush. The property was a staging point for cattle on their way to summer grazing on the Bluff High Plains from Mansfield.
You are able to participate in a private tour of the property and learn about the historical significance; with cattle whose linage dates back to the original settlers some 100 years ago.

After a sumptuous lunch at the homestead Michael will transfer you back to Melbourne, either a city accommodation or the airport to meet an onward flight.
