Bullo River Station

Bullo River Station is a five-star outback station experience. Located in the Northern Territory of Australia, 800 kilometres from Darwin, the 400,000-acre cattle property was made known through the legacy of Sarah and Charles Henderson in the 1950s.

The property continues to operate as a working cattle station, running 4,000 head of Brahman-cross cattle for export. Horses and helicopters are used to muster and handle the stock on a seasonal basis.
Guests are invited to witness station life first hand or enjoy one of the many adventure activities available at Bullo River Station. The sprawling property contains vast areas of pristine wilderness and is rich in native fauna – visitors will see wallabies, dingoes, wild buffalo, saltwater crocodiles and large numbers of migratory birds. The ancient outcrops contain galleries of Aboriginal rock art.

Guests wishing to experience authentic Australian bushcraft will delight at getting involved in the day-to-day activities. Join the staff on four-wheel drives and all-terrain vehicles as they look after the herd of approximately 4,000 Brahman cattle. Activities may include bore checks, lick runs, cattle-yard work, viewing the seasonal muster from vehicles, farm touring, and more. To stay at Bullo River Station is to be caught up in the energetic life of a working cattle station in the Top End.

Guests can expect to see plenty of bird life and native fauna because of the natural permanent waterways on the property, plus some of the best barramundi fishing in the Northern Territory – the Bullo River meanders for over 80km through the property, from the lush freshwater Bullo Gorge to the mighty saltwater tidal Victoria River, which also forms the eastern boundary of the property.

From the air the mid-winter landscape is impossibly beautiful. We cross ochre mountain ranges, enormous meandering rivers like chocolate milkshakes and waterholes clogged with pink and white lilies. The occasional saltwater crocodile can be seen lazing in the mud. There are flocks of galahs and solitary sea eagles. A mob of feral pigs runs helter-skelter through the water lilies.- Daily Telegraph (UK)

Local rock art sites offer insights into the significance and complexities of Aboriginal culture, and its significance for generations of people past and present.

The guest wing, located only a few metres from the main homestead, consists of 12 double/twin rooms running off a central corridor. All of the guest rooms were refurbished in late 2018 and now offer contemporary décor, comfortable beds, air conditioning and ensuite bathrooms. Rooms are serviced daily and have sliding doors access to the lawns surrounding the homestead.

Dining Options

All meals and beverages are included in the package. Food has always played an important role in station life and Bullo River Station honours the tradition while bringing a modern touch to the table. Breakfasts are usually served outside on the homestead verandah, while lunch is often a picnic, enjoyed beside peaceful billabongs or under the shade of a magnificent boab tree. Dinners are informal and the menu relies heavily on the two exceptional products of the property, namely fresh barramundi (hopefully one you’ve caught yourself) and organic prime beef from the surrounding pastures.

The top end of Australia has two distinct seasons: ‘The Wet’, from October to March is when the summer rains prevail and the humidity increases; ‘The Dry’ season, from May to September, has warm sunny days and cool nights and is the peak season for visitors and the period of most cattle related activity. Bullo River is closed during the wet season between October and end of February.
