The Australian
Location: Melbourne
Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and Australia’s second-largest city. It’s known for its lively, cosmopolitan centre set on the northern banks of the Yarra River as well as a fanatical love for the creative arts and good living.
Visitors appreciate its restless creative energy as well as its distinct enclaves like Chinatown, the Greek Quarter and Carlton (Italian quarter), home to cultural flavours, specialties and charm. The nightlife is buzzy, intimate and cutting edge: wander through the historic laneways to find the latest hidden restaurants, music venues and bars, then spend the morning shopping amongst the glitz and glamour of the ‘Paris End’ of Collins Street. The architecture – much of it historic – is imposing and the arts scene arguably the best in the country: the Gallery of Victoria is especially good and there’s always something interesting happening at Federation Square.
Eating and socialising is important to Melbournians – perhaps best experienced in stylish Southbank which enjoys views over the Yarra River and well-toned St Kilda, a beach suburb with a sand-fringed strip of places to eat, drink and bay-watch.
Melbourne is also known for its sporting passions, and is home to several international events including the Australian Open Tennis and Australian Formula One Grand Prix.
