Merrindie Mountain Retreat

Merrindie Mountain Retreat is a chalet-style contemporary home perched in Victoria’s High Country. Set at 800 metres on the flank of majestic ranges, it offers views of Victoria’s Alpine National Park and makes a perfect base from which to explore the natural beauty of the region.
This is quintessential Australian country, etched into the national conscience through the works of Banjo Paterson, most especially his epic poem, The Man From Snowy River. Today, guests at Merrindie similarly take to the saddle to gallop over the plains and valley slopes – but they’re also invited to take a 4WD or helicopter to get very different perspectives on the landscape, its history and wildlife.
Borrowing from both the alpine lodge and the outback homestead, the Retreat is designed to inspire, the open plan is made for sharing. The great communal living space has a cavernous open fireplace and generous, comfortable furnishings. Expansive decks and generous windows mean you’re never far from the magnificent views or fresh mountain air.
Merrindie can accommodate large groups but can also be tailored to become an intimate space for small parties. The master bedroom (plus generous ensuite bathroom) is located in an entire wing; a second wing has two extra double-bedrooms. (This wing also has a multi-bed dormitory.)
Merrindie is best experienced in conjunction with Watson’s Mountain Country Trail Rides, whose hosts can cater to your every need – whether they relate to relaxation, adventure or fine country cooking.

Merrindie Mountain Retreat offers guests a rarefied overnight haven, with an exquisite meal and a comfortable bed the perfect antidote to a day in the saddle. The first sight of the chalet-like Merrindie quickens the pulse with the anticipation of arriving somewhere special indeed.

Location: Victorian High Country

High Country is probably famous to most Australians for its skiing, with major downhill ski resorts in Mount Buller, Falls Creek and Mount Hotham. But out of snow season, it also offers visitors three classic reasons to visit: beauty, action and great food.
High Country is indisputably adventure country, courtesy its rugged landscapes of ranges, valleys and peaks. Climbers and abseilers are drawn to Mount Buffalo National Park’s awe-inspiring cliffs; 4WD-lovers ‘go off’ on the network of classic tracks around Mansfield; rafting, caving, hang gliding, mountain biking also happens in the High Country.
As for horse trails, the majesty, size and remoteness of the Alpine experience means that ‘Man from Snowy River moments’ are authentic and available to anyone. (And at last you have a good reason to buy your Drizabone, that classic stockman’s oilskin coat!)
The High Country is also something of a food hub, home to villages that pride themselves on producing fare that is both fresh and fabulous. There are winemakers here, too: knock on a King Valley cellar door, where dynamic vintners in family wineries set trends with Italian varietals, frequently matching Prosecco, Nebbiolo or Sangiovese with rustic Italian cuisine made by enthusiastic, entrepreneurial families. Fresh cheeses, meat, fish and olives are also plentiful, particularly in Milawa, the regional breadbasket. Let well-known chefs find groundbreaking ways to deliver local produce to your plate.
