Located in the Port Campbell National Park by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, the 12 Apostles are fascinating and majestic limestone structures. These structures have become one of the best known sights on this popular stretch and they rise a formidable 45 meters above the ocean. These are truly a sight to behold and an absolute highlight for anyone traveling the Great Ocean Road.
How were the 12 Apostles formed?
These towering structures owe their formation to erosion caused by the southern ocean, the results of some extreme weather conditions over many years. Over time, the limestone became eroded and formed caves. These caves then turned into arches as the erosion continued. Eventually the arches collapsed, resulting in the formation of these distinctive limestone “stacks”, that visitors can see today.
Although the site is called the 12 Apostles, only eight stacks actually remain due to the others collapsing from ongoing erosion. It is thought that continued erosion could cause the collapse of further stacks in the future, but there is also the possibility that new apostles could be formed from the remaining headland. The original arch can also be found here, rising eight meters high above the crashing waves.
Today, these structures create a breathtaking sight and this has become one of the most iconic and popular sights on the Great Ocean Road. Many visitors head here for photo opportunities or simply take in the beauty and awe-inspiring sight of the stacks from the mainland or even from helicopter flights, which operate daily.
