This tour is a combination of adventure, Indigenous culture, nature and wildlife – complete with incredible views of the Coorong’s silver sands as you enjoy a fine dining experience like no other. Gain an intimate understanding of an oft-unexplored slice of paradise in all its raw beauty in this incredible adventure all taking place just 90 minutes from the heart of Adelaide.
Your tour will commence at 9:30am sharp, with your private local guide meeting you at the Goolwa Pipi Co. factory, located in Port Elliot. For all local South Australian guests, an 8.30am pickup service will run from the Intercontinental Adelaide, located on North Terrace.
Your guide will first drive to Mundoo Wharf, where your specially customised 4WD vehicle will be driven onto a barge. The 20-minute barge ride down the Mundoo Channel will allow you to arrive directly at the Mouth of the Murray.
After exploring some of the more beautiful parts of the coast during the morning, it will be time to stop for a ‘cuppa’ (cup of tea or coffee), paired with local delicacies on the pristine beach, before jumping back in the vehicle and continuing with your journey. During this experience you will have the opportunity to see an abundance of natural history and wildlife – with the rare hooded plover and Australian Sea Lions often seen about these areas.
30 kilometres down this magnificent stretch of beach is today’s real highlight. This section of the Coorong is home to South Australia’s cockle industry, and with exclusive access you will be able to gain insight into the operations of a commercial fishery. There will also be an opportunity to try your hand at cockling.
We have been given express permission by the Ngarrindjeri to bring people to this special place and talk about elements of Ngarrindjeri culture. You will get a truly exclusive insight into an incredibly sustainable and sophisticated people. We will acknowledge the principal of Ruwe / Ruwar – Connectivity between the lands and waters and all living things. The local pipi (Goolwa Cockle) has helped sustain generations of Ngarrindjeri with their continuous presence in the area dating back some 9600 years, the end of the last ice age.
Across the sand dunes you’ll walk to the Younghusband Peninsula and glimpse the beautiful places the Ngarrindjeri inhabited, including an interpretation of the native plants and bush tucker. Here, you’ll have privileged access to some of the original Aboriginal midden sites and see how and why the Ngarrindjeri, exquisite chefs that they are, traditionally cooked pipis in ancient earth ovens, which are still visible here today.
By now you would have worked up an appetite and it’s time for lunch. This outdoor dining experience is something not easily forgotten with your feet in the sand and the Southern Ocean as your backdrop, you’ll enjoy a sumptuous two course seafood lunch, including the freshest cockles as your entrée. Cooked personally by John, this sumptuous seafood feast includes locally owned Ngarrindjeri business “Wild Eats” native herbs and spices grown at Raukkan, on the shores of Lake Alexandrina, and wines to match.
After a leisurely late lunch, you then begin your journey back, with the tour concluding with a drop off back at Port Elliot at approximately 4.30pm, or back in the CBD at 5.30pm respectively.
