You private guide will meet you at your Hobart accommodation to begin your day with an introduction to Tasmania’s capital city, with its vibrant waterfront, Salamanca Place and historic Battery Point before starting your journey to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.
Bonorong offers empowering wildlife experiences and is dedicated to wildlife rescue and preservation. Experience Tasmanian Devils, Wombats, Wallabies, Quolls and other Australian animals first hand. This dedicated team of wildlife carers provides an invaluable service to the research and protection of native wildlife in Tasmania.
Before travelling to Mt Field, enjoy lunch, with a main course included at The Possum Shed, set along the banks of the Tyenna River.
Mount Field National Park is the oldest and most diverse national parks in Tasmania. From the tall forests at the base of the mountain to the unique alpine plants at its summit, this national park offers the visitor an array of natural wonders.
Explore the green forest canopy of the National Park with a rainforest walk to Russell Falls. This magnificent three-tied waterfall is the highlight of the National Park and it featured on Australia’s first postal stamp. Appreciate the incredible diversity of vegetation on your walk, and crane your neck to see some of the tallest trees in the world.
There are wide varieties of wildlife in the national park, including many of Tasmania’s native icons and endangered species, such as the Eastern Barred Bandicoot and the Eastern Quoll. Eleven of Tasmania’s twelve prevalent bird species can be spotted here too.
The winding road that leads to the higher slopes of the mountain pass through an ever-changing succession of plant communities. Interestingly, Mt Field is unusual in that plant diversity increases with altitude. The Pandani Grove walk around Lake Dobson is the perfect place to discover some of the park’s bizarre alpine species. With patience, and a little luck, you may even see a platypus in the lake.
The drive from Mount Field is very pretty and only 1 hour 30 minutes. You will have time to absorb the experience and ask your very knowable guide any questions you may have on the journey back to Hobart, where you’ll arrive by about 5.30pm.
