Your private guide will meet you at your accommodation in a privately appointed luxury vehicle between 7:30/8:00am. Your day begins by visiting a wonderful locally owned wildlife park where you will see one of the most incredible marsupials on this planet; the wonderful fury and ever so cute Koala. A trip to Australia is not complete without a photo alongside your little companion.
You will then head north along the spectacular coastline and through cane fields to the Daintree River, where we cross by cable ferry and drive up the Alexandra Range and enter the Daintree section of the World Heritage protected rainforest. This is the oldest continuously growing rainforest on Earth – a place of spectacular beauty, rugged mountains, deep gorges and flowing rivers with numerous waterfalls. Boasting the highest biodiversity on land, the Daintree rainforest, as part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area, is home to 30% of frog, reptile and marsupial species in Australia; 65% of bat and butterfly species; and 18% of Australia’s bird species.
Surrounded by the magnificent Daintree mangroves & rainforest you board your shared Cooper Creek Cruise. You will be lucky enough to have a very experienced river guide on this special cruise with no other boats at all around to scare away the wildlife. The boats are well equipped and stable. The boats are comfortable in all weather conditions as they have covers that protect from both sun and rain.
The Cooper Creek, part of the Daintree River ecosystem, is the habitat of an extensive array of wildlife, many endemic to this area and so not found anywhere else. These include rainforest and water birds, snakes, frogs and of course estuarine or saltwater crocodiles – from the newly hatched to the largest dominant males. The naturalist guides are real locals and their passion for the local environment and wildlife is reflected in their presentations – you’ll be amazed at the animals they find for you! The
photo opportunities are without peer on this exciting & informative, yet peaceful cruise on the Cooper Creek.
You will enjoy morning tea consisting of locally grown tea & coffee, and freshly baked scones with jam & cream in a stunning settling beside the river on a private property nestled in the rainforest. You might want to take a swim in the crystal-clear waters with the cute fresh water turtles that live here. Your guide will take you on a rainforest walk to help you appreciate the wonder of the Daintree. Look for Boyd’s Forest Dragons hiding on trees, Cassowaries calmly stalking through the rainforest searching for colourful fruits, and the cute Musky Rat Kangaroos scurrying timidly in the undergrowth.
Lunch is a special treat – eat delicious meals inspired by local produce, in a beautiful rainforest setting. After lunch you will get the rare opportunity to hand feed wallabies rescued after injury and nursed back to health.
Continue north to Cape Tribulation, identified by James Cook shortly before he struck a reef as he charted the east coast of Australia in June 1770. Set amongst the rainforest in Cape Tribulation is Jungle Surfing. Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours are a truly remarkable way to see the rainforest. Strapped into your harness you fly through the trees on zip lines, up to 20 metres above the ground, stopping at 6 tree platforms to take in spectacular birds-eye views over the treetops, down at cascading streams and out to the Great Barrier Reef. Your Jungle Surfing Guide is up there in the trees with you, pointing out impressive features of the oldest living rainforests on the planet. This is an experience you won’t forget in a hurry! Jungle Surfing is safe, fun, fully guided and no experience is necessary. It is suitable for all adventurers from the age of 3 years.
Stroll on a near-deserted beach that is one of the few places in the world where 2 World Heritage areas sit side by side – here the Wet Tropical rainforests run down to the meet the fringing coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Turn heads for home, stopping the local icon The Daintree Icecream Company. Here local & exotic tropical fruits and spices grown on the property are blended with vanilla ice cream and served in a tasting cup of the 4 flavours of the day. As well as traditional favourites Mango, Coconut and Banana, you might also get to taste Wattleseed, Black Sapote or Davidson’s Plum. (additional own expense)
The Alexandra Range Lookout is the spot for outstanding panoramic picture postcard views of the Daintree River, Snapper Island and on a clear day, Port Douglas. As the setting sun casts beautiful purple hues over the sugar cane fields and then disappears behind the now dark mountains, your guide will drop you back to your accommodation and bid you goodbye.
