This morning after meeting your private guide, we’ll make our way towards the beautiful Litchfield National Park, which is just over an hour from Darwin by car. Using one of the lesser-travelled roads into Litchfield, we’ll stop and view an impressive stand of the endemic, Magnetic (Amitermes Meridionalis) Termite Mounds. These mounds line up like giant headstones and play an important role in our tropical ecosystem.
After hearing the incredible tales of some of the tallest termite mounds in Australia, we’ll continue further into Litchfield and turn onto the Reynolds River 4WD track that’ll lead us to Tjaynera/Sandy Creek Falls. From the parking area, a 1.6 kilometre walk (or just under 1 mile) along the creek track, takes us to the falls and its pristine plunge pool. This spring fed waterfall and plunge pool is amazing to swim in. At the base of the waterfall a small rock ledge is a great place to sit and unwind.
Enjoy a picnic lunch in these beautiful surrounds, before we make our way back along the creek. Re-joining our vehicle we’ll take a short drive to the Blyth Homestead, established in the late 1920’s and recently restored, it stands as a reminder of the tough pioneering times in the Top End. From here we’ll make our way to Green Ant Creek, Tjaetaba Falls. The walking trail leads us along the creek through monsoonal forest via a viewing platform to admire Tjaetaba Falls plunge pool and this sacred site. The track continues up to the rock pools above the falls where the traditional custodians request we swim and enjoy the views.
Re-joining Litchfield Park Road we’ll travel East through the park, making a comfort stop before reaching a 4WD track that travels North towards Darwin along the old rail foundations and returning to your accommodation early evening.
